Background
Sellit is a case study to design a better user experience for an Android peer-to-peer resale app. Users need an efficient and usable way to browse, buy, and sell second-hand items from other people. This is not a built-out product, it’s a case study to showcase my process and imagine a more user-centered product.
This case study shows how I design usable interactions by using Material Design patterns and applying ecommerce usability research findings.
This case study focuses on:
Content strategy, including user flows, site map, and navigation patterns
The search flow for finding new products to buy
Usability of product page layouts
My Role
I did all research, interaction design, and visual design for this prototype.
Assumptions
I didn’t do original user research, so I made the following assumptions about my users and their needs:
Our users are anyone who wants to buy or sell used products
Our users are individuals, not companies.
Competitor and Usability Research
Research Questions
What features and navigation categories are typical for peer-to-peer sales apps?
Which of Material Design design patterns are most appropriate for the content of Sellit?
What are usability best practices for search interactions and product pages?
Research Methods
Method 1: Competitor analysis
I reviewed 6 competitors to identify patterns in the information architecture, including key navigation sections.
Method 2: Material Design Guidelines
I refer regularly to common design patterns to plan and design more usable flows. To create an Android app design, I relied on Material Design.
Method 3; Published usability research studies
I steep myself in usability research related to the interactions I’m designing. When designing with Material Design Guidelines, I used usability studies to decide which Material Design patterns to apply.
Navigation
Navigation
I audited 6 classifieds and e-commerce and identified 5 task-oriented sections of the navigation as shown.
Explore products for sale
Re-find previously found products
Post and manage items for sale
Message buyers and sellers

Make it stand out.
It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
